Flavored Water Is trending - But not without criticism
Consumer advocates warn about artificial additives in water enhancers
What's really in your water?
Water is healthy - no doubt about it. But as soon as it's mixed with powder, syrup, or drops, things start to change. On social media, these colorful add-ins are currently having a major moment. But the consumer organization Verbraucherzentrale NRW took a closer look at 9 of these popular products - and the results were less than refreshing. Many of them contain artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners that experts consider questionable.
A sweet taste - with side effects
Regularly reaching for flavored water might sound harmless, but there's a catch: your taste buds quickly adapt to the sweetness. The downside? Plain water can start to feel boring - especially for kids and teens. That’s why consumer advocates recommend dialing back the dosage. The mixing instructions on the label often lead to a drink that’s far sweeter than you'd expect, which could impact gut health and insulin metabolism in the long run.
Not-so-natural flavors
Even when the label says “natural flavoring,” the actual source might surprise you. Raspberry flavor, for example, doesn’t have to come from raspberries - it can be derived from wood. Many products also boast added vitamins, often in excessive amounts. The bottom line from nutrition experts: if you’re eating a balanced diet, you don’t need extra vitamins in your drink.
A pricey habit
Let’s talk numbers. Tap water costs about 0.3 cents per liter. With flavored water enhancers, that price can jump to as much as €2.65 per liter. So cutting back isn’t just smart for your health - it’s also easier on your wallet.
