Between appetite and control

What should I cook tonight? Was that snack really necessary? Thoughts like these pop up several times a day for many people — but for some, they never really stop. “Food Noise” is the term used to describe when your mind constantly circles around food — often intrusive, repetitive, and hard to silence.

British psychologist Dr. Charlotte Ord explains that these thoughts mostly arise from dieting and food restrictions. The more we try to control, the stronger the focus becomes.

When diets are the problem - not the solution

The term “Food Noise” became especially well-known with the rise of weight-loss injections like Ozempic. Many say these drugs don’t just reduce appetite but also quiet their constant food thoughts. However, experts warn: this isn’t a permanent fix. Once the medication stops, the “noise” often comes back - sometimes even louder.

What really helps

Instead of cutting out foods, build structure. Nutrition expert Isabelle Mack recommends regular meals, weekly planning, and making sure you get enough energy. Keeping a diary of your food-related thoughts can help spot patterns - and give you the chance to take control. Mindfulness, exercise, and creative distractions also help lighten the mental load.

In the end, it’s not about control but relaxation. Because food should nourish and delight — not stress you out.
