A power outage hits the city like a shock: no lights, no coffee machine, no fridge – and most importantly, a fully stocked freezer slowly starting to thaw. From Sunday roast to ice cream or frozen vegetables, suddenly you wonder: what can you still eat, and what should go straight into the trash?

How long does frozen food last without power?

Modern freezers are true insulation champions: if the door stays closed, contents can last up to 24 hours. A standard freezer compartment holds for about 10–12 hours.

Important: once the temperature rises above -9 °C, thawing begins and the risk of bacteria increases. So keep that door closed! Even a quick peek to check on the ice cream can accelerate the warming process.

What can go back into the freezer?

Bread, cakes & raw vegetables: usually safe to refreeze. The texture may change slightly, but flavor generally remains intact.
Meat & fish: only refreeze if still cool or slightly frozen. Fully thawed or warm meat should go straight into the pan or trash.
Ice cream: loses its creamy texture when refrozen – either eat it quickly or toss it.

Cook instead of throwing away

One simple way to save food: cook it! Cooked meals usually hold up better in the freezer than raw food, and the quality suffers less.

For short power outages, cool boxes with ice packs or helpful neighbors with working freezers can be a lifesaver.
